Member of the Month June 2021: Becky Wilkinson

Coach Hol

June member of the month goes to all round hero and ray of sunshine Becky Willkinson. Becky joined TIO last summer, having done some CrossFit previously at a box in Norwich, where her sister coaches. Ever since joining she's shone as one of those people who you love to workout alongside and she is a joy to coach. Always humble, she turns up and smashes it regularly, sometimes surprising herself at just how fit she is! Here’s what she had to say when I asked her about her TIO experience to date:

How did you first get involved with TIO? I went to my first ever CrossFit class with my sister around 6/7 years ago in Norwich but I didn’t join straight away as my main sport was swimming so that took up all my time. I continued to go on and off whenever I was back in Norwich but I couldn’t fully commit to a club until I stopped swimming competitively at the end of 2019. After the first lockdown I was looking for a club to join as I finally had more time and that’s when I realised TIO was just around the corner so I joined as soon as gyms reopened last June! It was one of the best decisions I have ever made and I feel very grateful to be able to train at the best gym with such a lovely group of people! What’s your most memorable CrossFit moment so far? Murph yesterday! I didn’t plan to do it Rx as I didn’t think I would be able to complete it but I was so pleased I did! The sun was shining and everyone was supporting each other. It was such a good atmosphere and the best way to spend a bank holiday Monday! I was buzzing afterwards, I never thought I’d be able to do 100 pull ups and 200 press ups! What’s your favourite workout/movement?Any long workout...the longer the better and ideally with some running in it (maybe even Murph!)

Lifting wise... a power clean or deadlift!

...and your least favourite? Snatch or overhead squat! I need to stop avoiding the classes which they are in, if not I’ll never get any better! What’s your number one fitness goal this year? I am running Manchester Marathon in October and my aim is to run it in around 3 hours 30 mins. I would also love to be able to do a bar or ring muscle up! What do you do when you’re not at the gym? I am not good at sitting still and doing nothing so anything active or outdoors! I love going out for a long walk or a long run at the weekend. I am also a massive foodie so I love eating out or spending time in the kitchen cooking and baking!

One thing people might not know about you is... I used to compete in swimming at national level for my age group!

Also, my whole family goes to CrossFit... Mum, Dad, Sister and Brother! We all do a CrossFit session together on Christmas Eve!

If you could give a new member one piece of advice, what would it be? I have been to a lot of gyms in my time and TIO is by far the most supportive, encouraging, inspiring and welcoming of them all! You will never leave TIO without a smile on your face and you will always leave feeling better than you did when you arrived.

Also don’t be put off by it being outdoors... it’s the best place to train in the summer and you won’t want to train inside ever again (It’s even quite fun training in the rain)!

Thanks for always bringing your sunny smile and can-do spirit Bec! We'll all be rooting for you in the marathon and bring on the muscle ups... they are coming this year for sure!
